Vermicelli upma, also known as sevai upma, is a delicious vegetarian food that you like to eat often. One of the things you will like about this food is that it is easy to make. This cuisine serves well for breakfast and as a light evening snack. In the vermicelli upma recipe, vermicelli, green peas, chilies, coconut gratings and coriander are the main ingredients.

If your taste buds crave for more taste, you can use coconut chutney, tomato sauce and or baked potato chips. If you do not want to make, or do not have, any of these, use instant mango pickles.

Servings: 2 to 3

Ingredients:

1. Vermicelli 1 cup
2. Water 2 cups
3. Oil 1-and-1/2 tablespoon
4. Mustard 1/4 teaspoon
5. Channa dal 1/2 teaspoon
6. Urad dal 1/2 teaspoon
7. Cumin seeds 1/4 teaspoon
8. Green chilies 4-5
9. Ginger 1/2 teaspoon (chopped)
10. Curry leaves 8-10
11. Onion 1
12. Tomato 1
13. Cooked fresh peas 1 tablespoon
14. Fresh coriander leaves 1 teaspoon
15. Grated coconut 1/2 tablespoon
16. Salt to taste

Vermicelli Upma Recipe


1. Heat 1 teaspoon of oil in thick-bottom utensil.
2. Add vermicelli when oil becomes hot.

3. Fry vermicelli until it turns light golden brown.

4. Transfer vermicelli to another bowl and keep aside.
5. Add oil to the same utensil.
6. Add mustard when the oil is hot.

7. Add channa dal when mustard starts to splutter.

Fry for 1 minute.
8. Add urad dal, and cumin seeds and fry.

9. Add curry leaves and chopped green chilies when dals turn to golden brown.

10. Add chopped onion and ginger.

Fry till onion turns to golden brown.

11. Add chopped tomato and 2 pinches of salt.

Fry till tomatoes are half-cooked.

12. Add 2 cups of water, cooked fresh peas and salt.

13. Add fried vermicelli when water starts to boil and mix.

Cover with a plate.
14. Cook till all the water absorbs.

15. Add grated coconut and chopped coriander leaves and mix.

16. Turn off the stove.

Cover the utensil.

Leave the utensil on the stove for a few more minutes.
17. Vermicelli upma / Sevai upma is ready.

Serve hot with coconut chutney and or baked potato chips. Or, serve with fresh yogurt / curd.

TIPS Vermicelli Upma
1. Some types of vermicelli consume more water. After cooking the vermicelli upma check the vermicelli. If it is hard, add some more boiling water to the vermicelli upma and mix. Cook till all the water is absorbed.
