1. Broken wheat / cracked wheat / dalia / godi nuchchu 1/2 cup
2. Oil 3-4 teaspoons
3. Mustard 1/4 teaspoon
4. Channa dal 1/2 teaspoon
5. Hing / asafoetida 2 pinches
6. Curry leaves 1 sprig
7. Green chilies 2-3 or to taste
8. Onion 1
9. Ginger, chopped 1/4 teaspoon

16. Grated coconut 1/2 tablespoon

How to make Broken Wheat Upma?

1. Dry fry the broken wheat till you get the aroma.

2. Chop all the vegetables.

3. Heat oil in a pressure cooker.

4. Add mustard when the oil is hot.

5. Add hing and channa dal. Fry till the dal turns golden brown.

6. Add curry leaves, onions and green chilies.

Fry for a minute.

8. Add potato, capsicum, tomato and 2 pinches of salt.

10. Pressure cook till one whistle.

Switch-off the stove.
11. When there is no steam in the cooker, remove the lid.

Add lemon juice. Mix.

TIPS Broken Wheat Upma
1. To avoid the slight stickiness of the cracked wheat upma, add more oil in Step 3.
2. To cook the upma, directly in the kadai:

- Cook the vegetables completely in Step 8. If necessary, add little water to ensure the vegetables are cooked fully.

- Add the measured quantity of water. When it boils, add the broken wheat. Mix.

- Cover with a plate and simmer till all the water is absorbed by the broken wheat and till it becomes soft.
