5. Mustard seeds 1/4 teaspoon
6. Jeera / cumin 1/2 teaspoon
7. Black pepper 1/4 teaspoon
8. Cashew nuts 10-15
9. Ginger, chopped, 1/2 teaspoon
10. Curry leaves 1 sprig
11. Green chilies, cut into pieces, 2-3
12. Turmeric powder 1/8 teaspoon
13. Coconut gratings 1-2 tablespoons
14. Cooked peas 1/4 cup
15. Salt to taste
16. Chopped coriander leaves 1 tablespoon
17. Water

How to Prepare Pongal?

1. Wash rice and moong dal together twice in a pressure cooker. Drain the water

Add about 2-and-1/2 cups of water.

Soak for 15-20 minutes.
2. Set flame to low.

Cook rice and moong dal till 1-2 whistle(s).

The rice you cook should be soft.
3. Heat oil in a utensil till the oil becomes hot.

4. Add mustard seeds.

Add jeera when mustard seeds begin to splutter.

Fry till it starts to splutter.

Fry till the cashews turn to golden-brown.

Add the cooked rice-moong dal mixture and about 2-and-1/2 cups of water.

Mix.

Bring the mixture to boil.

Cook till the rice absorbs some water and the mixture becomes semi-thick.

8. Add peas, salt and coconut. Mix thoroughly.

9. Add ghee and chopped corinder leaves.

Switch off the stove.

NOTE
The mixture becomes gradually thick, as it cools down.
