2. Moong dal / split green gram / hesaru bele / payar paripu 3/4 cup
3. Oil 1-2 tablespoon(s)
4. Mustard seeds 1 teaspoon
5. Jeera / cumin 2 teaspoons
6. Black pepper 1-2 teaspoons
7. Green chilies 2-3, chopped
8. Ginger (chopped), 1/2 teaspoon
9. Curry leaves 2 sprigs
10. Turmeric powder 1/4 teaspoon
11. Salt to taste
12. Coconut gratings 1 tablespoon
13. Chopped coriander leaves 1 tablespoon
14. Ghee 1 tablespoon (optional)
15. Lemon juice to taste

How to make Rava Pongal?

1. Wash moong dal.


Add about 3 cups of water.

Pressure cook till two whistles.

2. Dry fry rava till it becomes light golden brown or till you get the aroma.

3. Heat oil in an utensil.

4. Add mustard, jeera and black pepper.

Fry till the jeera turns to golden brown.

5. Add chilies, curry leaves and ginger.

If you are preparing the rava pongal for the first time, add the moong dal after you add the rava.

Because the water content will be more, rava may form lumps if you do not mix the rava properly.


Bring to boil.
8. Add rava slowly, in a circular motion, to the boiling mixture.

TIPS Rava Pongal Recipe
1. Add crushed black pepper, instead of pepper corns, for spicier pongal.
2. Add more boiling water, the quantity of which depends on how watery you want the pongal to be, in Step 8, after mixing.

The reason you may want to add more water is the rava pongal becomes thick soon after it begins to cool.
