Ingredients:

Onion, finely chopped, 1/2 cup
2. Tomatoes, finely chopped, 1/2 cup

3. Oil 1 tablespoon
4. Chili powder 1 teaspoon or to taste
5. Garam masala powder 1/4 teaspoon or to taste
6. Turmeric 1/4 teaspoon

7. Sugar 1 pinch
8. Milk 1/2 cup
9. Salt to taste
10. Chopped coriander leaves

For paste:

1. Groundnut / peanut 1 tablespoon
2. Sesame seeds / til  / ellu 1 teaspoon
3. Cashew nuts 10-15
4. Poppy seeds / gasagase / khas khas / khus khus 1 teaspoon





How to make Onion-Tomato Gravy?

Preparing the paste

1. Soak the cashew nuts and poppy seeds in water for about 30 minutes.

TIP
If you soak the poppy seeds, you can grind them finely.

2. Dry fry the groundnuts till these crackle and get a few brown spots.

Ground Paste

Making the Gravy

1. Heat the oil till it becomes hot. onion tomato gravy s5
2. Add onions, sugar and a few pinches of salt.




Fry till the onion turns to light golden brown.

3. Add turmeric and chili powder.




Fry for a few seconds.

4. Add the tomatoes.





Fry till the oil separates from the mixture.

5. Add the ground paste, water, garam masala, milk and salt.



Cook till there is no raw taste.

Garnish with coriander leaves.

NOTE
Ensure the gravy has a thin-consistency, because as it cools down it becomes thick.

TIPS Onion and Tomato Gravy
1. You can fry the onions, in Step 2, using less oil. However, the cooking time will be more.
2. To speed the frying of onions and still reduce the oil content:

- Add more oil and fry the onions
- Remove the excess oil, after frying is complete.
3. Use green chilies as a substitute for chili powder. If you use both these items, the gravy will be tastier.
4. You do not have to use milk in Step 5. If you do use it, the gravy will be richer. Cream can be used in lieu of milk.
