Ingredients:

1. Avalakki (thick) / aval / beaten rice 1 cup
2. Moong dal / mung / green gram dal / hesarubele 1/2 cup
3. Oil 1 and 1/2 to 2 tablespoons
4. Mustard 1/4 teaspoon
5. Tomato 1
6. Fresh peas 1 tablespoon
7. Onion 1
8. Carrot 1 no
9. Capsicum 1 small
10. Green beans 8-10
11. Curry leaves 1 sprig
12. Hing few pinches
13. Jaggery small piece
14. Turmeric 1/4 teaspoon
15. Tamarind juice to taste
16. Bisi bele bath powder / vangibath powder about 2 tablespoons
17. Salt to taste
18. Lemon juice
19. Fresh coriander leaves 1 tablespoon

How to make Avalakki Bisi Bele Bath?


1. Chop the onion, carrot, capsicum, tomato and green beans.

Cook carrot, peas and green beans till they are soft.
2. Cook moong dal in one-and-a-half cup of water, ensuring the dal is not cooked too soft.

3. Heat oil in a pan.

Add the mustards and hing when the oil is hot.

4. Add curry leaves, onion. Fry for a minute.

Add capsicum.

Fry till the capsicum are just soft.

5. Add the cooked vegetables, moong dal and tomato.

Add about three cups of water, making sure the mixture is watery.
6. Add bisi bele bath powder, tamarind juice, jaggery, turmeric and salt.

Bring the mixture to boil.

7. Wash the avalakki or aval.

Add it to the above mixture. Mix.
8. Boil for about 5 minutes.

If the mixture is thick add some more water and bring it to boil.

Set aside for 3-5 minutes.

The avalakki or aval absorbs the water and becomes soft.
